Margaret Laurence

On July 18, 1926, Margaret Lawrence was born in Scotland's father Robert Wimis and the Irish mother, Vena Simpson Wames. Until Margaret moved to Winnipeg in 1944, they lived in Nie Wapa, home of Mrs. Wemis in Manitoba. Margaret was only 4 years old when her mother died of kidney infection. It was at this time that her aunt came to take care of her and later married her father. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Margaret's grandfather's house.

One of Canadian literary giants. Born in Nieupawa, Manitoba, Margaret Lawrence graduated from Union College (now Winnipeg University) and lives in Africa with her husband. Her early novel is about her experience in Africa, but her famous novel, Stone Angel, is in a small town in Manitoba, like the city she grew up.
