He was born in Lachute, Quebec on September 16, 1890. He spent his early days at Blockville where he studied at the University of Brockville. He then entered the University of Toronto where he joined the Canadian military training team as an officer of Queen's own rifle in Canada. After acquiring a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1914, he took part in the 38th (Ottawa) Canadian Infantry Battalion (now Ottawa's Cameron Highlander (Den Edinburgh's own long-term coaching)).
During the mission of the French army in 1916, he was awarded Somme's excellent service order. At the age of 26, he acquired Victoria Cross at Vimyriid on April 9, 1917.
With the help of two competitors (Pvts.James T. Kobus and Arthur James Hay won the Excellence Award) at Captain MacDowell of Vimy Ridge, France on April 9, 1917. In July 1929, he married Norrah Jean Hodgson of Montreal. They originally lived in Toronto, but moved to Montreal in 1931. He has two sons, Thain H and Angus J. They still live in Montreal (2011). His wife died on November 1, 1983

Four people fighting the Canadian Vimy won the Victoria Cross, the British Army's best brave award winner. One of them, Captain Sain McDowell of the 38th battalion, entered the German bomb shelter during the fight of hill 145 and let 77 of Prussian troops believe there are a lot of people with him.
