If your sight is weak, glasses, contact lenses, drugs and surgery may not be useful. Reading, shopping, cooking, writing, and watching television may be difficult. The main causes of eyesight loss and blindness in the United States are eye diseases associated with aging, that is, macular degeneration, cataracts, and glaucoma. Other eye diseases, eye damage and birth defects may also cause blindness.

Whatever the cause, you can not recover lost sight. However, it can be managed. Losing sight means that you may need to reorganize your life and learn new ways of doing things. If you have some vision, visual aids like such special glasses and large printed books can make life easier. Some devices are useful for invisible people, such as text reading software and braille books.

The more you find and treat blindness or eye disease, the more likely it is to maintain your sight. You should periodically receive a full eye exam by an eye care professional

Routine low vision assessment usually includes medical history and psychophysical measurements. By adding mental health status and low vision quality of life questionnaire to medical history it is possible to provide better low vision rehabilitation quality for patients with low vision. Low vision rehabilitation is very beneficial as it can provide a lot of help for low vision patients. Low vision normally refers to severe visual impairment, not necessarily limited to distance vision. Low vision is suitable for people who can not read newspapers at normal viewing distances even with eyeglasses or contact lenses. They use a combination of visual and other sensations for learning, but they may need to adapt to lighting and print sizes, and sometimes require braille. In the case where there is a visual field defect where the peripheral field of view shrinks to the field of maximum diameter, the better eye has a central field of 20/200 or less, there are corrective eyeglasses or a central field of view greater than 20/200. The field of view is at an angle of less than 20 degrees with better eyes

People with markedly reduced vision may be trained to train personnel providing technical assistance. Visually handicapped rehabilitation experts (among which are associated with blind managers) can provide advice on lighting and contrast to maximize vision. These experts can also use nonvisual aid tools and can guide the patient. People who show vision loss and blind final prognosis may require supplementary services because of the higher risk of suicide. Many studies indicate that the rapid acceptance of severe visual impairment results in better and more effective compliance of the rehabilitation program. In addition, if blindness is not completed, psychological distress is the highest, but prognosis is reported to be undesirable. Therefore, early intervention is essential for a successful psychological adjustment.
