In most Persian carpets, the area of the carpet is surrounded by stripes or borders. These ranges are from 1 to more than 10, but usually have a large main boundary surrounded by small border lines or protection boundaries. The main boundary is usually filled with complex and delicate linear or curved design. Small border stripes represent simpler designs such as vines. Traditional Persian border arrangements are highly protected over time, but they can also be modified to occupy the main boundary of the premises. This feature is common in Kerman carpets in the late nineteenth century, but is probably replaced by the French Aubusson and Savonnerie weave designs.
