Iroquois is pronounced "eer - uh - kwoy" in English. This is a broken English French Algonkian word, which means "real snake". This may be an insulting nickname (Algonquin and Iroquo Indians are traditional enemies). Today they call themselves Haudenosaunee or six countries. Many other tribes such as Huron and Cherokee are sometimes called "Iroquois" tribe. They are distant relatives of the Iroquois tribe and speak the appropriate language, so they are called. When the pilgrims crossed the Atlantic in 1620, they landed on the rocky coast of the area where the Indian people of Wampanoag (Wam pa NO ag) live. Wampanoags is part of the people of Algonkian and is part of the Woodland Cultural District. These Indians live in the village of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. They live in a cupola house called a hut. They are made from poles covered with slabs of eucalyptus and white birch bark. The architecture of the hut is different from the tip used by Great Plains Indians.
In 1524, New York City became the headquarters of Algonquin Indians. From North Carolina to Canada, they are divided into hundreds of autonomous regions living along the east coast. In the same year, the Italian Giovanni da Verrazano employed in Italy became the first white man to become the harbor of New York Bay (Encyclopedia Americana pgs 236, 237). New York City is located at the mouth of the Hudson in the southeastern part of New York (Britannica, p. 914). The current area of Brooklyn is home to the Canargees Indians.
