Literary Techniques Used in Mother to Son by Langston Hughes

(3-7) The use of "rivets" and "debris" represents the pain and discomfort experienced by the mother, and torn planks may symbolize potentially dangerous situations. If you step on a broken staircase, you may fall. With discomfort, mothers may have to avoid dangerous situations. The image of the broken stairs also left the impression of poverty to the reader. She is talking about ways an uneducated woman speaks - a woman who must always work hard. For example, she uses a word like "is not" and a phrase like "no crystal stair". Other examples of her native language speech are "I" and "Climbing". Her words reinforce her idea that it is still discouraging but still struggling to achieve better goals.
