Life in Apartheid-Era South Africa

Racism The KMT was founded in 1948. Apartheid does not just mean separate entrances to inferior public services, benches and non white buildings. It also deprives South African blacks of their citizenship (making it tribal-based Bantustan) and abolishes all political representatives who are not white people.

Nelson Mandela is an important person of anti apartheid activity, leading the resistance movement and serving as a lawyer. He was arrested in 1962 and sentenced to life imprisonment because he tried to overthrow the government. His imprisonment did not quench resistance. After years of violent riots and sanctions abroad in the country, Kuomintang began reforming the apartheid system in the 1980s.

In 1990, when President F. W. de Klerk released Mandela from prison, the system was dismantled. Mandela continued to serve as President in 1994.

It is not easy to make apartheid culture pass through South Africa. The country is still faced with big ethnic problems. But thanks to Mandela's achievements, many South Africans and foreign politicians gathered at the National Stadium in Johannesburg today. This is a big move.
