Lewis and Clark Matter

This limestone is formed by a calcium-rich biolayer present in the ocean around 325 to 365 million years ago. The red sandstone of Pennsylvania era known as Amsden rose to its present height during the Laramid Orogeny campaign about 70 million years ago. This bulge creates seams in Madison's limestone and later becomes a cave like a cave in Lewis or Clark. Most of the caves were excavated during the ice ages, and the water supply during this period was much bigger than today.
