Lewis and Clark Expedition

Even before buying Louisiana, Jefferson sponsored the mission of exploring the Pacific to strengthen the US 's claim to the West. Jefferson chose his personal secretary Meriwether Lewis to become the captain of the company due to his scientific interests and experience of the wilderness. Lewis picked close friend William Clarke in close relationship with Clark's nature experience and the Indians. Jefferson traced the Missouri River to two men and their crew and asked to fill the gap of knowledge that existed in the west.
