Lewis and Clark Caverns in Montana

Louis Cave and Clark Cave in Montana State are spectacular geologic stations to and from the Yellowstone National Park and can go through the US 287 through the back of the Madison Valley. The impressive geological features of these Montana caves include stalactites, stalagmites, spiral rocks and pillars. Named after famous explorers, Lewis and Clark's expedition team crossed the park, but in fact did not find the cave. The name was to commemorate the expedition of the President Theodore Roosevelt and was designated as a National Monument on the same day as the Grand Canyon.

Inspired by the caves of Montana, Lewis and Clark, they later became state parks and the Grand Canyon became a national park. The caves of Lewis and Clark in Montana State are in the Madison Limestone layer of the Mississippi era. This limestone is formed by organisms with calcium shells dead in the sea discovered in this area about 350 million years ago. About 70 million years ago, there was a huge uplift that greatly tilted the former level rock formations and eventually build a junction to become Madison Limestone's Lewis Cave and Clark Cave. Calcium rich limestone slowly dissolves as slightly acidic groundwater penetrates into these sloping limestone seams. The establishment of most Lewis caves and Clark caves, as well as many other small caves found in this vast stratum of the whole western region, was formed during many cycles of the ice ages. This is due to the increased water supply during these ice ages, which requires the dissolution of limestone to form these caves and caves.
