Acute leukemia is characterized by a rapid increase in immature blood cell count. The congestion caused by these cells makes it impossible for the bone marrow to produce healthy blood cells. Due to the rapid progression and accumulation of malignant cells, acute leukemia requires immediate treatment and then malignant cells spill into the bloodstream and spread to other organs of the body. Acute leukemia is the most common form of childhood leukemia. Chronic leukemia is characterized by excessive accumulation of relatively mature, but abnormal white blood cells. It usually takes months or years for it to proceed, and the cells are produced at a much higher rate than usual, resulting in many abnormal white blood cells. Although acute leukemia must be treated immediately, it is sometimes necessary to monitor chronic forms for a period of time before treatment to ensure maximum treatment.
