Lesson: Making a Double Bar Graph Introducing the Concept

Your students previously created and explained bar charts, but this course may be the first time they encountered a double bar graph. First, look at the bar graph and ask the students where they saw. The bar chart tells the students to discuss the idea of displaying information in a bar or rectangle. Help students generate and organize data about themselves to make them interested in topics.

Material: painting, blackboard or lighting board, small square paper or two color self-adhesive note

Prerequisite skills and concepts: Students need to be familiar with bar graphs to display data. They should know that the charts have descriptive titles and their axes are marked. They should be able to read the number on the axis from the edge of the strip to determine the number displayed

Say: I want to know more about you and your interests. I am interested in your favorite sports. Write the names of your favorite sports in these papers - the color of boys and the color of girls

Combining the reaction of boys and girls, we accumulate various reactions. If you mention lots of different sports, combine several smaller numbers into one "other" heap.

Students recommend making axes and bars for various sports and numbers. Sketch a bar graph for a student or two students

Q: How can I find this information if I want to know the number of boys who chose each sport and the number of girls?

Students answer that boys and girls are written on different color paper and that this information can be classified and calculated for each sport. Let the students do this and enlarge the chart to show the results

Teach the students to create a second chart next to the first chart. Put the students side by side with two bars of different colors to show which boys and girls will choose. The bar graph has x and y axes. As shown in the figure above, in most bar graphs, the x axis is horizontal (flat). As shown in the following figure, a bar graph may be created so that the bar chart is lying. On the x axis, numbers representing different periods or names of comparison objects are displayed. In these figures, the x axis has a state name. As in the above figure, in most bar graphs, the y axis extends vertically (us and down).
