In 1973, Leonid Afremov graduated from Vitepusu's high school and entered Vitessusk Education University where he studied art and graphics. While attending college, Afremov was featured in March Chagall, Picasso, Dali, Modigliani and works by French Impressionists of the 19th century. His early works of art are strongly influenced by Chagall and Modigliani. During college years, Afremov participated in various school exhibitions, and even sold a few more paintings. In 1978, Afremov graduated from Vitebsk Art School and became one of the elite members. Later, when Mark · Chagall lived in Vitebsk, he learned private lessons from famous local artist Barovski.

Leonid Afremov was born on 12th July 1955 in Vitebsk, Belarus, when the former Soviet Union was born in Jewish parents Bella Afremova and Arkadiy Afremov. His father is a shoes designer and a shoe store. His mother works at a metal factory in Vitebsk. He was born in the same town as Mark · Chagall and later became an important role model for Afremov. Afremov grew up in a traditional Jewish house. His parents and grandparents talked about Yiddish at home. Despite the government's anti-Semitism, the family practiced many Jewish traditions, practiced religion and endangered the imprisonment to speak their language. Their birth certificate and the government's identity prove that their nationality is Jewish
