Las Meninas

Las Meninas is regarded as one of the best paintings ever, by critics and artists' admirers. It was drawn when the Spanish glory faded, Velázquez was once surrounded by the remnants of the great courts, now it is in confusion and debt. King Philippe did not have the right male heir to the throne, was destroyed in the war of thirty years, and fell into depression because he did not make much effort to control the state. After studying Las Meninas for a long time from far, I finally got the opportunity to see it with my own eyes. In January 2008 I went to Madrid's Prado with my teacher Ray Berry and he introduced my work at the faculty Velazquez. This is the second time he saw Las Meninas, the first time decades ago. I think that this is a pilgrimage - in addition to seeing this picture, we think that we must pay tribute to painters who have had a great influence on my view of Ray, paint and painting. Velázquez is a painter's painter, and regardless of their pedigree and style of painting, all painters I know will respect him. In all respects, Las Meninas is a masterpiece of Velázquez. Access to paintings is usually explained in sacred words - clearly you are not just watching Las Meninas, you will experience it. On a flight to Madrid, I doubt if Las Meninas in Prado will live to Las Meninas in my head. Hooray
