Kate Oberreit Chopin was born February 8, 1851 in a famous family in St. Louis, Missouri. Her father, an Irish immigrant Thomas Ohhelati, was a successful St. Louis businessman who was murdered in a railroad accident when Kate was just five years old. Kate's mother Eliza left a wealthy widow and brought up Kate in "a family managed by a surviving widow, a curious and economically independent women's community" (Toth, 187).
