John Updike’s Portrayal of Individualism vs. Conformity in Society

Society is a group of people who live together, share customs and traditions. When immersed in this society, people can begin to take specific criteria into the social structure of the community. These standards are usually discussed implicitly by never going to the public, wearing or letting others swear in front of others. Young people often feel that these standards are extremely restricted and promote collective mobility of movement.

From social expectations of obedience or resistance and escape, we have two options. In the story of "A & P", John Updike commented on the nature of the desire to escape social constraints. This story happened in the 1960s. The desire to get out of the color of our view on the environment.
