His father played a trombone in a US Navy band and influenced John when he began learning music at the age of six. He began learning the violin, but in the end he learned all the wind instruments. John Philip Sousa was very interested in joining the band, so he tried to join the circus band at the age of thirteen. His attempt failed and soon his father employed John of the Washington DC navy band and stayed there for 8 years.
