On October 27, 1940, the fifth of the thirteen children raised by his Italian immigrant parents, John and Franny, was born in South Bronx. Prior to his first arrest in 1968, his brother Gene and his childhood friend Ruggiero were arrested for minor offenses such as strikes on the streets and car theft.
