Joan Mitchell was born in Chicago in 1925. After graduating from the Chicago Art Museum in 1947, she received a James Nelson Raymond Foreign Travel Scholarship and brought her to France for one year from 1948 to 1949. Her painting was abstracted there. After returning to New York, she joined the famous "Ninth Street Show" in 1951 and soon became one of the young abstract expressionist painters famous in the United States. She regularly exhibited in New York for the next 40 years and maintained a close friendship with many New York schools and poets.
In 1955, she started to allocate time between New York and France, and in 1968 she settled in a small town Vétheuil outside Paris who had been working until 1992. Mitchell's commitment to the abstract principle of gestures remains solid and uncompromising in her biography of her paintings for nearly fifty years, as abstract expressionism has been hidden by a continuous style. Klaus Kertess summarizes her accomplishments as follows: "She completely converted abstract expressionist gesture paintings to her own vocabulary, which can also be ours Her comprehensive absorption of Mathis and Van Gogh's lesson It is closely related to the movement of color and light and paints. She she can reflect her consciousness flow and paint in nature I will.
Mitchell came to Vétheuil and offered personal support to many young artists who sometimes stayed only overnight, sometimes just as much as during the summer. Communication in her paper suggests that this generosity often brings life changing effect to those who spend time with her. As the Joan Mitchell Foundation was founded with her will to create support and perception for individual artists, she continued to be generous in her life. In addition, the mission of the Foundation includes the promotion and preservation of her heritage, including her excellent work, papers including letters and photographs, and other records related to her life and work.
