Founded on May 13, 1607, the colony was named Jamestown to commemorate the king. The fate of Jamestown remains unresolved for many years and some historians believe that the survival of Jamestown is due to Captain Smith's efforts. Originally the colony was managed by a committee of seven men, and Captain Smith was nominated as a member of the committee by a company in Virginia state. Ironically, he was arrested for a rebellion at the voyage to Virginia, barely escaped, hanged, and arrived at Jamestown as a prisoner.
