James Prescott Joule FRS FRSE (December 24, 1818 - October 11, 1889) was a British physicist, mathematician, and wine maker born in Salford, Lancashire. Joule studied the nature of heat and found a relationship with mechanical work (see Energy). This leads to the conservation law of energy, which in turn leads to the development of the first law of thermodynamics. An energy unit derived from SI, Joule, is named after him. James Prescott Joule was born in Salford, England, on the eve of Christmas in 1818.
