James Langston Hughes

(1 February 1902 - 22 May 1967) James Langston Hughes was born in Joplin, Missouri and was born in a family of abolished slaves. He was John Mercerland's younger brother Charles Henry Langston, the grandson of the first black American grandson who was elected publicly in 1855. Hughes went to Central High School in Cleveland, Ohio but began writing poetry. It was selected as a 8th grade student and a class poet. His father thought that he could not make a living while writing, and encouraged him to pursue a more practical career.
