In South Africa in the 1930s and 1940s, many people were traumatized, such as robbery, loss of livelihood, beatings, ultimate tragedy, loss of lover. In his novel 'Cry, Dear Country', Alan Patton guarantees that this is not due to his true life in South Africa, but is a fictional account. James Jarvis received the tragedy of this novel. His son Arthur Jarvis was killed at home by Absalom Kumalo in an attempt of robbery.

Jarvis changed because of the pain. When James Jarvis was first introduced, he was a very proud man. He lived a very successful life, but he knew little about his son's life. He is a kind person, but there is no sympathy for local problems. His eyes are not open to atrocities around him yet (Paton 112). At some point in the book, James was surprised at "Crime?" (P. 140). Only on the day before he understands his son's faith, he can see violence and crime in his country. Before Arthur died, James Jarvis had no clue about his son's faith. While reading his work, James found out that Arthur risked helping others and eventually found out that he was doing a good study of social problems, his son was doing a good research on social problems, South Africa I found out that I am interested in helping the social structure of society develop.
