As a pilot of the Air Force, he performed 100 duties at the Pacific Front and then saw military duties in Korea. Although he did a short job in the advertising industry, he left the business world after receiving Guggenheim scholarship, mainly on his writings. He received the National Book Award in 1966 and served as a poetry consultant to the Congress library in 1966.
