The first of the nine children of Bodis (Jones) was David (stepfather), a pastor and factory worker in Harlem, New York State. Baldwin has been a store missionary for three years since the age of 14. His sentence began to escape from his harsh father-in-law. He studied at Frederick Douglas Middle School and DeWitt Clinton High School.
He graduated from high school in 1942 and moved to New Jersey to start work on the railroad. In 1944 he moved to Greenwich Village where he met Richard Wright and began his first novel "In My Fathers' House." In 1953, he completed his important novel "It to the mountain" that was part of his autobiography in his young days. The following year he wrote the script "Amen Corner" and won the Guggenheim scholarship.
In the 1960s Baldwin returned to the United States and actively supported citizenship in politics.
Baldwin wrote a novel, poetry, essay, and screenplay later in life. He died of stomach cancer at the house of St. Paul de Vence in France.
