His mother's name was Harriet Augustus, but Douglas did not know much about his father. As he learned how to pronounce, Frederick separated himself from other slaves. He used the Tommy Old spelling book to remember the letters of the alphabet. Frederick also got help from his owner's wife, Sophia (A & E Video). Unfortunately, when his master discovered his wife's slave education, he immediately told that slave education was "illegal and dangerous" (Douglas 128). Frederick still insisted New England, eventually fled to New England, and slavery was illegal. Frederick wrote his life there as a slave and gradually became a wonderful speaker. When he died, he was 78 years old.
