Coastal erosion survey of Pollock Bay Objective --- Purpose 1: Understand whether coastal material flows through the coast through the Pollock Bay. Goal 2: Determine what type of maritime defense is best for Pollock Bay. If LSD (Long Shore drift) is occurring, I hope to find the following: a) deposit it at one end of the bay and fight against any abstraction like a breakwater. b) The roughness of the pebble in the long distance drift direction increases. The wear process erodes the cobblestone.
Coastal areas around the Bengal Bay are susceptible to strong winds, storm surges, structural movements, excessive sedimentation effects, rapid coastal erosion, fluctuations in salinity of water and soil, and long-lasting floods. According to their scientific investigation in the Bay of Bengal, Blasco et al. (1994) reported that the mangrove area of India and Bangladesh, especially the Ganges estuary (Sunderbans - the largest natural mangrove area in this area, found in one block) cures low-pressure wounds and its total area There is no human interference by natural inheritance that can maintain. Mangroves in these areas are highly shale soils with high salinity and moisture, destructive tidal effects, and flat areas growing under geological conditions since the Tertiary (Middle Pliocene) Strong winds exposed to adverse environmental conditions. Through their root system, mangroves can stabilize the matrix in which they appear.
The experience of coastal erosion in Sri Lanka dates back to 1920 (Swan, 1974; 1984). It is becoming more serious as mangroves are being eradicated by intrusion (human settlement), collection of firewood charcoal, and intensive shrimp farming in coastal areas. The mangrove area in 1986 is estimated to be about 12,000 hectares, but it decreased to 8,687 hectares in 1993 and only 6,000 hectares in 2000 (Samrayangke, 2003). Approximately $ 30 million has been spent on breakwaters and other buildings to counter the coastal erosion on the coasts of the south and the west (UNEP, 2006), but coastal erosion still exists in some coastal areas .
