In the face of fear, humans are more predictable than imagined. When faced with a threat from an unknown enemy, people quickly identify the root of their fear by taking irrational actions and accusing others. These other people are people different from norms often defined by people and society abandoned often. The response to these opponents is fast, and often very tough. This intolerance occurred throughout history, initially by a Salem Witch trial, then by a red panic and McCarthshire, and more recently by a war with terror.
In the early 17th century Puritan arrived in New World from England where they established religious intolerance colonies. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Puritan was a very strict branch of the Anglican. When they felt that their approach was still very close to the Catholic Church, they broke up with the church and they went to America to avoid religious persecution in England. Puritan was concerned about this new land, especially residents. They often blame the local people due to voodoo and magic. They are worried that there is evil everywhere even in their communities.
Puritan was a very intellectual person. They believe that education is very important, so they are critical thinkers. They are very smart, but sometimes they are not tolerant. One of the wish of Puritan was to establish and find many elementary schools, grammar schools, universities. In fact, the institutions of the first universities and public schools in the United States were established by Puritan. They are very interested in contemporary British literature and the latest scientific theory. So, this desire was clearly realized.
Puritan was not tolerant, had a motive to avoid crime while carefully observing the sins of others. The feeling of guilt is the power in Puritan's faith. They made great accomplishments in providing education for all children, but their intolerance makes it difficult for the Church to prosper in the young and constantly changing country. In the "minister's black veil", the congregation praised the Nathaniel Hawthorne, Hooper, the pastor (priest), considered as a "self-disciplined" person, a characteristic of Puritan who might have been his Puritan. Wearing a veil, they believe that if Hooper is not crazy, he will make a dark and terrible evil.
Many believe that Puritan has fled from England to establish religious freedom, but they proved to be as tolerant as the British National Church. In the 1630s, when opponents including Puritan Minister Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson challenged Winslow Governor at Massachusetts Bay, they were exiled. Roger Williams asked about Puritan's occupation of Indian territory. Williams also claimed a complete separation from the English church, a position rejected by Massachusetts other Puritans, and the fact that the state could not punish individuals for that belief. He accepted that the unbelievers are destined to curse forever, but Williams does not believe that the state can force the true orthodox. I thought Puritan was putting him in danger, but he continued to discover that Rhode Island was a colony, protecting Massachusetts' other Puritans and their brothers.
