Effective school leaders have skills to create, implement, evaluate, improve, and share employee development plans. I met Ben Rhodes, principal at Sandy Creek Junior High School and interviewed the details of his annual employee development program. We start with the design process and focus on community and school goals. Shaelynn Farnsworth is a leader in the integration of literacy and technology. As a high school teacher, she redefines her English classes, including not only where she learns literature, but also how the technology shapes the future of communication. She continues to serve as a school improvement consultant for AEA 267 in Iowa. Her primary focus is in technology, literacy, and real education, supporting school planning and implementation of various school initiatives. She is a Google Certified Innovator and has undergone project-based training at the Barker Institute.
Pete Lorain, author of articles on secondary education and other educational issues, is currently working under a private agreement. Prior to retirement, I served as a high school teacher, counselor and administrator, principal and department manager of regional junior high school, head of personnel department, president of the Secondary School Association from 1996 to 1997.
Principals work in private or public domain, junior high school or high school. Most of the major works are public schools. They usually work for a long time and attend many events and meetings outside regular class hours. The principal felt it useful to play with children and family members, but that work may be stressful. The principal faces great pressure to meet success criteria, deal with fund shortage, reduce bullying, continuously update technology and hire certified teachers.
