The cloud refers to the Internet. The Internet is beginning to be called cloud. The IT system map uses the cloud as a symbol for expressing the Internet. The concept of the cloud was as old as the 1960's, but this idea was for influencing John McCarthy and JCR Licklider (formerly the modern Internet). Regardless of attribution, the cloud is supposed to be a computer on the Internet that provides infrastructure such as storage of operating systems and software applications on the Internet for a fee. In the cloud, the PC acts as a client and may require more hardware and software than the hardware and software necessary to run the operating system and web browser. Cloud applications run on one (unknown) application server on the Internet and data is stored on several (unknown) file servers on the Internet. A workstation is a high-end, expensive computer built for complex programs, only one user at a time. Some complex programs such as science, mathematics and engineering are useful for computer design and manufacture. Workstations may be inappropriately named for marketing reasons. Actual workstations are not usually sold at retail stores.

Our current Internet model is also a centralized system. Data is stored on the web server. When receiving data on the Internet such as display of a website or file download, the Web browser sends a request to the Web server hosting the data, and the Web server provides the requested data by providing the requested data I will respond. Centralized Internet is not fault tolerant. If the server fails, the entire system will be affected. Block chains are cryptographically secure databases that contain an immutable transaction history for each transaction, including digital signatures.
