Metabolic pathways are complex and interdependent. As the environment changes, metabolic reactions must be tweaked to maintain a set of constant conditions within the cell, a condition known as homeostasis. Control of metabolic pathways also allows organisms to respond to signals and actively interact with their environment. Control involves monitoring the effect of these changes in enzyme activity on the overall rate of the pathway. For example, enzymes may show dramatic changes in highly regulated activity, but enzymes do not participate in the regulation of this pathway unless these changes have little effect on metabolic pathway flux.
