Nursing research, including qualitative research and quantitative research, has long been a part of nursing professionals. This is important in teaching medical practice. Many nurses have basic knowledge of research, but when conducting research it is also important to understand personal values and beliefs to guide the type of research. Understanding the differences in epistemology, methodology, and method helps this choice to implement effective research projects.
This article compares and contrasts quantitative and qualitative research methods while explaining epistemology, methodology, and various methods used in each method. In this article, we will also briefly explain ethical considerations of research, using examples of related psychology. Here, when considering the epistemology behind the two methods of research, we have to look at it from our basic philosophy of ideas and concepts and how it is formed (Pidgeon & Henwood)
Since the method determines the use of quantitative or qualitative methods, research methods and research methods are interrelated. Referring to the research proposal, the ontology is the objective of objective epistemology, where the method used by positivism is quantitative. The research topic being studied is, first and foremost, that the store's brand will become more common than the brand name of the supermarket and how the luxury brand will benefit from the economic recession. Both have empirical methods, so more quantitative methods are used to study this topic. To obtain a more comprehensive image, quantitative and qualitative methods are often combined. There may be only one methodology, but the method may be different
Research and development has three methodological positions - quantitative, qualitative, and mixed method queries. The first two are contrasting because they are based on fundamental beliefs of epistemology and the third is a combination of the two methods considered unacceptable because there is no principle of epistemology. As Hoy (2010: 1) repeatedly stated, quantitative research is "scientific research including experiments and other systems, emphasis on performance indicators and management and quantification". It also stated that measurements and statistics are essential for quantitative methods as they are links between empirical or experimental observations and mathematical expressions of relationships.
