Intellectually Disabled People

This disorder is characterized by persistent behaviors such as infants, reduced learning ability, missing signs of intellectual development, not meeting educational needs, and lack of curiosity ("intellectuals" ). People with mental retardation can live a normal life, but some people need help.

"Developmental disability" is another general term. This refers primarily to people with intellectual impairment, but it represents a large number of people, including those without mental retardation. Mental retardation is one of the most common developmental disorders. It is estimated that 7 to 8 million people in the United States have mental retardation. Characteristics such as intractability and low tolerance to frustration are often associated with mental retardation. However, many children with intellectual impairment are happy and passive. Children with mental retardation, like children with average mental capacity, have a wide variety of personality and respond to challenges in their own way.

Mental retardation is a lifelong disorder that affects various areas of human life. More than three quarters of people with intellectual disabilities have mild intellectual disabilities. The rest has a range of moderate, severe, or deep intellectual impairment and may have several associated disabilities.
