Intellectual Disability

Mental retardation is one of the most common obstacles in the United States. President Obama signed a bill to change the name from mental retardation to intellectual disability in 2010, once known as mental retardation. People with mental retardation are the most common developmental disorders. About 6.5 million Americans have mental retardation. More than 545,000 children between the ages of 6 and 21 have intellectual disabilities and require special educational services at public schools. These statistics show that this is a fairly common mental disorder, but some children have very low level of damage while others have a very high level. (Mild, moderate, severe differences in mental retardation) Therefore, depending on the degree of disability, doctors and other experts may not recognize children's mental disorders.
