Introduction Basic Life Support (BLS) is a skill that many people in the community lack. Approximately 400,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur each year in the United States (American Heart Association, 2012), of which 89% are dead because onlookers do not undergo immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (American Heart Association, 2012). In the contra county community of Contra County, California, there are several cities that experienced adolescent tragedies that died due to sudden cardiac death and lack of use of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or defibrillators.
For public or bystanders witnessing the sudden collapse of adults: only compressed CPR or manual CPR. Manual CPR is CPR by itself, no mouth-to-mouth breathing. Adolescents and adults are advised to be used by those suddenly collapsing in an environment outside the hospital (home, workplace, park etc.). Try the Complex Learning Course: A number of life-saving training courses from AHA are available online at OnlineAHA and eLearning.Heart.org. Courses containing only cognitive learning can be done entirely online. In the course of teaching cardiopulmonary resuscitation, students must complete the online section and complete the AHA coach and face-to-face skill exercises and tests. The teacher evaluates the skills of the student, and if the two parts of the course are successfully completed, the student will receive a valid course certificate for two years.
