Historically, it does not reveal exactly how and when Islam came to Southeast Asia, but it was undoubtedly disseminated by businessmen in the 12th century. When Portuguese arrived in the early 16th century, Muslims had a solid foothold. This situation continued in the 17th century when Hadramout's Arabic merchants and scholars settled in this area and brought the mysterious Sufism of Islam.
