73). Punishment extends the servants' slavery, binds them, and helps owners continue to use relatively inexpensive servant labor. In addition, special restrictions on maids prevent you from marrying before the end of slavery, and they should pay a fine and serve children for another two years (Roark, The American Promise, p. 73). These cruel punishments reflect the harsh reality of the servant system.

Receive corporal punishment. When they survive labor, employees receive payment called "free membership fee" and become free members of society. As colonial demand for physical labor increases, the servant of the contract becomes more difficult to obtain and more expensive. The first slave was an African contract servant who was forced to become a contract servant for the rest of their lifetime. By the end of the seventeenth century, slavery in Africa became commonplace in colonies. In the early 18th century, a new law called "slavery law" was passed that regulates the legal rights of slaveowners and the status of slavery. Slaves are doing a variety of work. Many slaves are wild hands working in the southern colonized tobacco field. These slaves work very hard, and are often sneaky. The other slave is a housekeeper. These slaves do housework around the house and help at the owner's shop.
The servants of the contract are similar to other colonial immigration groups, including African slaves and transported prisoners. In fact, the servant of the contract is often called "white slave". All three groups were abused. These groups are also different. A convicted employee is the only group of immigrants and unpaid workers punished for criminal activity. Whether the contract employees are voluntary or mandatory workers, their contracts are temporary and are not enslaved for life like Africans. Table 1 compares the characteristics and privileges of contractual employees, detainees prisoners and free immigrants.
Diane Werges Basic Questions of Unknown Me and Slave: Slave and Contract What is the difference and similarity between me? Goal: Students can find Europe, British colonies, and Africa on the map. The flow of their researchers (contracting servants and slaves to the US) will understand the differences and similarities between contracting servants and slaves. Students will explain how Europeans become contract servants. Students will explain how Africans become slaves. With the main sources of information, students will learn about the difficult sea travels of contractors from Europe and the journey from Africa to slaves. Students compare the lives of servants with slaves using main sources and Alice Gill's historic novel Molly Bannaky. 1.B. Economic decision making is based on demand and results
