In Defense of Home and Hearth: Mary Lease Raises Hell Among the Farmers

Women are not generally considered to be related to populists, but in the early 1890s the most famous sportsperson was Mary Elizabeth Lease. In 1850, Leith was born in Pennsylvania Parents and Pennsylvania and became a school teacher in Kansas in 1870. She and her husband, the pharmacist spent ten years to make a living, but finally settled in Wichita in 1883. As a spokesman for the Irish National League, Lease entered political life, later became a leader of the Labor Order and Populist. Lease fascinates viewers from Kansas, Missouri, Far West, South with its powerful voice and charismatic speech style. In hundreds of speech she never said the most common sentence related to her name - farmers should prohibit "reduce maize and hell" ban. Whoever explicitly requests games of hell, lease is a powerful voice of land movement.

In the late 1880s, a series of droughts destroyed the West. West Kansas lost half of the population in four years. By 1890 the agricultural level was at the highest level ever. A famous populist writer and agitator Mary Elizabeth Lease told the farmers that they needed "reduce corn and hell". In cooperation with the southern sympathetic Democrats and the small third parties in the west, the peasant union promoted political power. From these factors, a new party called Populist Party has emerged. With the election of 1890, the New Party became an ally, controlled over a dozen states and governments in south and western provinces, and dispatched numerous populist senators and representatives to Congress.

During the 1890 election, this lease was a valid candidate for the farmers' association - a candidate for the People's Party - more than 160 speech took place. During the campaign, she was often mistakenly called Mary Allen and her enemies called her "Maria Lin". According to a three-hour speech at Halstead, Kansas, she said: "Farmers need to reduce corn and hell." The lease was very active in the 1892 presidential campaign. Popular candidate James Baird Weaver was participating in a miserable southern tour. In Minnesota and Nevada she will make eight speech a day. When the populist controlled the management of Kansas, she was appointed chairman of the National Charity Committee in 1893. She raised a dispute with the governor and was dismissed but returned to the Kansas State Supreme Court.
