After the Civil War in 1865, Carnegie withdraws from the railway business, establishes Keystone Bridge and plans to invest in the iron industry. In 1867 Keystone Bridge began construction of Isbridge of St. Louis, Missouri and East St. Louis, Illinois. The bridge straddles the Mississippi River and has a length of 1 mile or more and has never been completed before. Wrought iron is too weak to support the length of the bridge, so the solution is to use steel.
