A line graph compares the proportion of the population over 65 in three out of 100 countries.

Between 1940 and 2040, it is clear that the proportion of elderly people in each country is increasing. The greatest change in the elderly population in Japan is expected.

In 1940, about 9% of Americans were over 65 years old, Swedish was about 7%, Japanese was 5%. The proportion of the elderly in the United States and Sweden gradually increased over the next 50 years, reaching less than 15% in 1990. By contrast, until the beginning of the 21st century, Japanese figures were still under 5%.

In the future, Japan predicts that the proportion of elderly people between 2030 and 2040 will increase by more than 15% in only 10 years. By 2040, about 27% of the population of Japan will be over 65, whereas Sweden and the United States are thought to be somewhat lower by about 25% and 23%, respectively.
