METHODS: A systematic literature review was conducted on the definition of resilience of disaster related communities. We conducted a narrative analysis of the definitions and descriptions we identified to determine the resilience characteristics of the proposed community before, during and after the disaster. RESULTS: 80 related papers were found. There is no evidence of a common agreed definition of community resilience. Nonetheless, there is evidence that nine core elements of community resilience are common to the definition. The core elements are regional knowledge, community networks and relationships, communication, health, governance and leadership, resources, economic investment, preparation and spiritual outlook. From these core elements we have identified 19 subelements related to the resilience of the community.
