It is not easy to become PA, but it takes less time to become MD. Entitlements vary from state to state, but most doctor assistants receive a four-year degree, then receive a 25-month Certified Physician Assistant Program, and after one year of clinical rotation they are approved. During this month's rotation, PA will be exposed to various disciplines including pediatrics and emergency medicine. Finally, the student receives domestic certification and the license required for them to work in the field.

All states and the District of Columbia need a doctor's assistant to obtain a license. In order to obtain a license, the candidate must pass the National Doctor Assistance State Certification Examination (PANCE) of the National Doctor Assistance Authorization Committee (NCCPA). A doctor assistant who passes the exam can use the certificate "Physician Assistant - Certified (PA - C)".
