Cervical cancer occurs in the cervix and is the lower part of the uterus (uterus). Cervical cancer is a cancer defined by AIDS. This means that the diagnosis of cervical cancer shows the extent to which HIV infection has progressed to AIDS. Cervical cancer is most often caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. HPV types that cause cervical cancer are more common in HIV positive women. For HIV-infected women, periodic Papanicolaou exam is required to detect that cervical cells are cancerous. If you are an HIV-infected person, you should take two Papanicolaou tests in the first year after diagnosis. After that, if the result is normal, the Pap test is done once a year. If the result is not normal please tell your doctor the frequency of Papanicolaou test and the next step.
