Their folk songs and stories are viewed conscientiously as helpless, meaningless silly expression of race, whose American contribution to life is a strong back and weak mind. Even after the Civil War, prejudice of inward growth kept free people at the bottom of a strict caste ladder. Their folklore has repeatedly been ignored or deteriorated.
