I listened to our RJR at the local radio station in Jamaica this morning, on September 12, 1988, reminding people that infamous Hurricane Gilbert brought disaster to the island.
Many of us are crowded in the house of my grandmother's house (Mommy). Of course, there is not much sleep - I can not.
We hear strong winds, broken branches, root trees, and zinc plating are flying! Of course, there are other types of sounds that can not be explained.
Many of our neighbor neighbors are not so lucky as some of their homes have completely lost the entire roof!
I remember picking up two buckets / barrel nasi that fell from the trees! Most of them are also very suitable!
My father likes pears; I remember what he had come down in a few days to inspect his family; I saw him swallow some mature stuff - just In the drum :-)
Hurricane Gilbert will definitely have a memorable memory for those lucky (or unhappy) experiencing it.
Gilbert is the most devastating hurricane in the history of Jamaica and is considered to be the worst hurricane since Hurricane Charley in 1951.
St. Thomas announces one month emergency situation for St. Catherine, Kingston and St. Andrew
Because of the massive damage caused by Gilbert, the World Meteorological Organization retired in the spring of 1989; it was replaced by Gordon
The eye distance was about 15 miles. In the Kingston metropolitan area, the average wind speed of 75 mph and the wind speed of 127 mph are recorded. I got even stronger (888 mbar) when I looked down on the western side of Jamaica at 6 pm.
Until Hurricane Wilma breakthrough the hurricane in 2005, this is the worst hurricane in the history of the Atlantic basin.
In general, Hurricane Gilbert destroyed 433 people in the process (45 in Jamaica) and caused a loss of about $ 7.1 billion (1988 dollars).
Jamaica is located in the hurricane zone of the Atlantic, and as a result the islands are sometimes victims of heavy rainstorms. Hurricane Charlie and Gilbert attacked Jamaica directly in 1951 and 1988, causing a lot of losses and many deaths. In the 2000s (decade), Hurricane Ivan, Dean and Gustav also brought bad weather on the island. In land, aquatic and marine ecosystems there are dry, wet limestone forests, tropical rain forests, riparian forests, wetlands, caves, rivers, seagrasses, and coral reefs. Authorities recognized the importance and possibilities of the environment and designated some of the more "fertile" areas as "protected." Protected areas of the island include Cockpit Country, Helmsher Hills and Litchfield Forest Reserve. In 1992, Jamaica's first ocean park covering an area of about 15 square kilometers (5.8 square miles) was founded in Montego Bay. The Portland Coast Reserve was designated in 1999
Hurricane Gilbert was the most violent Atlantic hurricane ever before until Hurricane Wilma broke through in 2005. Gilbert became a Category 5 intensity hurricane formed during the 1988 Atlantic Hurricane season and was a very powerful tropical cyclone that caused extensive damage to the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. Gilbert is also one of the largest tropical cyclones in the Atlantic basin. At one point, the tropical storm was 575 miles (925 kilometers) in diameter. In addition, Gilbert is the strongest tropical cyclone that attacked Mexico so far
Gilbert was the tenth storm and the third hurricane of the 1988 Atlantic Hurricane season, which developed from the tropical cyclone of 400 Baht east of Barbados on September 8. After the intensification of the tropical storm the following day, Gilbert steadily increased while moving to the Caribbean Sea in the west-northwest. On September 10th, Gilbert reached the strength of the hurricane and rapidly intensified into the category 3 hurricane on September 11th. After the attack on Jamaica on the 2nd day, it jumped again, and on the evening of 13th September, Gilbert faded somewhat and landed on the Yucatan peninsula. At the same time, it maintains the strength of 5 levels. After landing, Gilbert immediately weakened to the Yucatan peninsula and appeared in the Gulf of Mexico as a storm of category 2 on 15th September.
