Human Organ Trafficking: A study of change in the Egyptian...

Global trafficking continues to be a major concern in the international transplant community. This article is based on an analysis of interviews with 274 end-stage renal disease patients who purchased kidneys in Egypt over the past 10 years.

Based on information extracted from a thoroughly structured interview, we identified four key factors related to organ purchasing. Investigation and discussion of the evolution of secret organ trading in each of the identified key factors

The first factor is related to payment. It describes the initial offer, the final price actually paid, the various other payments required, and the payment method used. According to the data, kidney prices have more than doubled in recent years, and payment methods are shifting from cash to more complex online payments.

The second factor is the degree of confidentiality associated with the purchaser's stay in Egypt. Interactions between buyers, sellers, brokers, surgeons and hospitals are explained in detail and the steps to avoid authorities' detection are explained. Analysis shows that the level of safety used by organ traffickers varies according to the level of general enforcement by national authorities

The third factor is the purchaser's awareness of care of himself. This includes views on medical staff, hospitals and accommodation facilities. This suggests kidney transplantation in a private clinic with poor facilities, rather than kidney transplantation at an early large general hospital.

The ultimate factor is related to the characteristics of the kidney seller recognized by the kidney buyer. These characteristics include basic demographic data and reasons to sell kidneys. This shows that the characteristics and nationality of kidney sellers are consistent with the mainstream political situation of North Africa and Levant.

Evolution of organ sales may suggest that criminal organizations may be involved in organ sales in recent years. This article concludes with a strong warning that potential kidney purchasers are illegal and unethical to buy kidneys in Egypt. This is also very dangerous. In addition to having unacceptable clinical risks, this procedure exposes purchasers to significant risks of personal and economic abuse by organ traders.

Changing the TVPA to include organ trafficking allows victims of trafficking in this form to benefit from other forms of trafficking. We should not discriminate form-based trafficking victims. Everyone is a victim and everyone is worth protecting. Expanding the scope of protection for trafficking victims in a small number of organs that may be trafficked in the country can not overwhelm refugee service. They may easily adapt to existing systems. Currently there is a limit of 5,000 T visa per year. 145 Thousands of T visas are available each year. Therefore, even if the scope of TVPA protection is expanded to victims of organ trafficking, it is rare to apply further pressure on a system designed to handle 5000.
