Your real name must be displayed on your car or ship California certificate and registration card

The name displayed on the record of the vehicle or ship must be changed or corrected in the following cases.

Note: If the last name contains a hyphen or multiple words, the last name will be displayed as a word on the CA certificate of ownership and the registration card. This is not an error. No correction is necessary.

In order to change or fix the name of the record of your vehicle / ship's California Motor Department (DMV), you must submit the following:

The correct name of the California certificate is printed or entered on the wrong name

The full name statement (REG 256) in part F of the actual statement indicates the reason for the signature change at the bottom of the form (see sample)

Request a statutory privilege to submit California's ownership certificate (REG 256) to the DMV at the above address and correct it

You have a vehicle certificate such as registration card, California photographed driver's license (DL) or ID card. (When mailing an application form, be sure to fill in the application form with the DL number or ID number.)

If your name or address has been changed (this does not include misspelled names or addresses), you must apply directly to the DMV office and present one of the following:

Unless you are submitting a copy or paperless title application (REG 227), the name change or modification is free. When adding or deleting the name of another person, the transfer fee expires because this is the assignment of ownership
