Because the term "chorus" has a secondary definition of a subset of the ensemble, people talk about orchestral "wooden choirs" or different "chorus" of sounds and instruments in multi-channel configurations. In the typical 18th and 21st century oratories and the masses, choruses or choirs are often understood to have more than two singers in each section, as opposed to quartet soloists of these works. The choir is usually chaired by the conductor or choir. In most cases, the choir is composed of 4 parts and is designed to sing in 4 parts, but as long as there are singers that can sing a part, the choir number may not be restrictive. Alr, the eight choirs, five parts each, Stabat Mater of Krzysztof Penderecki are three choirs, each with 16 voices and 48 pieces. Except for the four, the most common parts are 3, 5, 6, 8.
