Louis Laurent Marie Clerc was born in La Balme-les-Grottes in the southeastern part of France on 26th December 1785. He was born in a wealthy family serving the king and his father served as the mayor of their village from 1780 to 1814. When Clerc was 1, he fell down from the chair and hit his head against the floor, leaving a scar. His face bruise later becomes part of his name and the middle finger and index finger polish the right cheek near the mouth. Shortly thereafter, he got a fever and his hearing and smell were spoiled.
There is a long history behind sign language, ASL actually started in Europe in the 18th century. For a while, the historical incident of Milan in 1880 brought a serious blow to sign language. This has banned the use of Sign Language in deaf schools in many countries. However, many individuals and organizations continue to live this language. In addition, sign language can survive wherever new hearing or assistive technology exists. Sign language is always needed, its popularity is continuing or even growing. For example, many schools offer sign language as a foreign language, and many schools also offer sign language clubs.
The most commonly used Sign Language in Canada, American Sign Language or ASL can be found in most English speaking countries throughout the country. The relationship with English Canadians is not due to the similarity of ASL and English, but by the similarity of cultures and the history of languages (as some of the ASL vocabulary is from English). Therefore, ASL can be found in areas such as Montreal and Nunavut where English is not the main language. ASL is part of the French sign language series, born from the east coast of the United States, incorporates the Lange language (LSF) and other local languages.
A subset of this group contains languages that are strongly influenced by American Sign Language (ASL) or regional variants of ASL. Sign language in Bolivia may be regarded as a dialect of ASL. Thai sign language is a mixed language derived from ASL and native sign language of Bangkok and Chiang Mai and can be regarded as part of the ASL family. Other people who may be affected by ASL include Uganda Sign Language, Kenyan Sign Language, Philippine Sign Language and Malaysia Sign Language.
