The purpose of this article is to outline the development of civil defense in the United States from 1945 to the present. Lessons learned from selected medical aspects of civil defense and former civil defense initiatives were also discussed. Civil defense is defined as "activities organized by civilians to protect themselves during war and disasters" (Hyperdictionary, 2004).

Whether at home or battlefield, we focus on military, political and social history of war. First, we will briefly explain the causes of conflict, especially slavery and withdrawal, which led to war. We will spend most of our courses to investigate the development from 1861 to 1865, including family front, leadership of war, diplomacy, fighting motivation, and grand strategy. Finally, we will discuss issues relating to the restructuring of the national political system and the transition from slavery to freedom.
